Organizations: Developing a successful values-driven culture for family-owned business

This 65-year-old family-owned real estate development firm had significant properties in the Midwest and Eastern Europe. While their cultural values were implied, the leadership wanted to establish a clear set of values that would help create even greater synergy and results, scale, and engage generations to come. ClearSpace helped the client articulate its values and engage all employees in understanding and embracing them.

Scope

  • Facilitated the development of clearly articulated values by the principals of the business

  • Created a process that had employees design, develop and deliver the sessions to engage other employees in describing their behaviors that would reflect the values

  • Managed and co-delivered the values engagement process

Approach

  • Drew the wisdom from the leadership group to articulate the historically implied values

  • Engaged the firm’s employees in “co-creating” a picture of what the environment would be like if the values were alive and real

  • Transferred a rich skill set of instructional design capabilities to the client’s staff

Results

  • Engaged all employees in understanding and contributing to the new shared values

  • Reinforced the values throughout hiring and performance management systems

  • Engaged 20% of employees as designers and facilitators, further strengthening the shared ownership of the culture

  • Third generation family members are now key leaders in the organization
